Digital Imaging and Photomicrography (1105)
COURSE OUTLINE & SYLLABUS
Students learn essential image collection practices supplemented by lectures, demonstrations and exercises that enable students to collect better images and improve less than optimal images via digital processing.
This course covers the most important aspects of digital imaging microscopy including: camera and microscope hardware, system set-up, user settings, collection of quality images, introductory image processing, storage and printing.
There is no prerequisite for this course.
Basic camera hardware (lenses, film, CCD and CMOS image sensors); User settings (shutter speed, aperture, white balance, image exposure, contrast, file size); Basic microscopy, parts of the microscope, Köhler illumination, resolution, depth of field and useful magnification; Microscope – camera systems, image formation, aberrations and artifacts.
Attributes of quality images (color temperature, lighting, resolution, artifacts, recognizing aberrations, gamma, etc.); Image processing to improve image quality.
Image storage and printing considerations; Student projects and selected topics: Students are encouraged to bring their own samples.
Note: This course runs 8:00 a.m. to 5:00 p.m. on all three days.
