COURSE OUTLINE & SYLLABUS

Students will acquire the basic knowledge and practical skills to apply fluorescence methods in their areas of interest. The majority of the course will be hands-on demonstration and training in the practice of sample preparation for epifluorescence microscopy.

There is no prerequisite for this course.

Day 1: Course Introduction

  • Introduction to the theory and practice of epifluorescence microscopy
  • Introductory fluorescence investigations
  • Microscopes for fluorescence
  • Filter sets and cleaning

Day 2: The practice of fluorescence microscopy:

  • Pitfalls and shortcomings of fluorescence microscopy
  • Intrinsic, general and specific fluorescence probes
  • Viability probes
  • Sample preparation
  • Dye loading

Day 3: Continued practice:

  • Problem solving
  • Resources, materials and probes

Note: This course runs 8:00 am to 5:00 pm on all three days
