Fluorescence Microscopy (1210)
Dates Offered:
June 28-30, 2010
COURSE OUTLINE & SYLLABUS
Students will acquire the basic knowledge and practical skills to apply fluorescence methods in their areas of interest. The majority of the course will be hands-on demonstration and training in the practice of sample preparation for epifluorescence microscopy.
We are expanding Fluorescence Microscopy to a 3-day course this year. We are currently working on the syllabus and and course outline, and this information will be posted as soon as it becomes available. In the meantime, please contact the Registrar if you have any questions or need more information.
There is no prerequisite for this course.
Day 1: Course Introduction
• Introduction to the theory and practice of epifluorescence microscopy
• Introductory fluorescence investigations
• Microscopes for fluorescence
• Filter sets and cleaning
Day 2: The practice of fluorescence microscopy
• Pitfalls and shortcomings of fluorescence microscopy
• Intrinsic, general and specific fluorescence probes
• Viability probes
• Sample preparation
• Dye loading
• Problem solving
